MUSEUM OF THE ROCKIES host Dinosaurs & MOR April 12-14

Third annual “Dinosaurs and MOR!” festival April 12-14, bringing together top paleontologists, dinosaur enthusiasts and a lineup of activities for all ages.

Events include family-friendly programs, junior paleontologist passport stations and 18 presentations by scientists from around the globe. For more information and to purchase tickets to any of these events, visit museumoftherockies.org/dinos.

“Dinosaurs and MOR!” festivities begin with an appreciation night for museum members on Friday, April 12, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Members can attend paleontology-themed passport activity stations, book signings by paleontologists Stephen and Anne Brusatte, John Horner and Ted Rechlin, and the premiere of the new planetarium show, “Dinosaurs: A Story of Survival.” The night culminates with a presentation by Michael Serio and the unveiling of a new, 3D-printed troodon skeleton, followed by a Q&A session.

THE DINNER AND KEYNOTE ADDRESS by Stephen Brusatte will occur Saturday, APRIL 13, at 6:30 p.m. in Inspiration Hall, located in MSU’s Norm Asbjornson Hall. Dinner tickets are $60 for members and $75 for non-members, and space is limited. All other events during “Dinos and MOR!” will occur at Museum of the Rockies.

THE ALL-ACCESS PALEO PACKAGE will occur on Saturday and Sunday, APRIL 13–14, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  For a complete list of speakers at the event, visit museumoftherockies.org/dinos.

FAMILY WEEKEND will be held on Saturday and Sunday, April 13–14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will include paleo-passport activity stations, planetarium shows, and opportunities to meet world-class paleontologists. Participants can get their passport stamped at all stations and receive a Junior Paleontologist Certificate signed by MOR’s curator of paleontology John Scannella. Book signings will occur at various times by the Brusattes, Horner and Rechlin. This event is included with membership or regular museum admission.

MSU Bobcats Spring Rodeo APRIL 11-14

This year’s MSU Spring Rodeo will run Thursday, April 11, through Sunday, April 14, at the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.  It will be the rodeo teams’ only home competition of the season.

THE RODEO CONSISTS OF 2 SEPARATE EVENTS:  one on Thur, & Fri. and one on Sat. & Sun. The full competition breakdown is below.

  • Thursday, April 11: Performance rounds begin at 7 p.m.
  • Friday, April 12: Slack begins at 10 a.m., Short-Go Performance at 7 p.m.
  • Saturday April 13: Slack begins at 10 a.m., Performance rounds at 7 p.m.
  • Championship Sunday, April 14: Short-Go Performance begins at 1 p.m.

FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO WATCH AT HOME, the rodeo will be live streamed.  The 7 p.m. sessions on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and the 1 p.m. session on Sunday will be broadcast on MTN stations across Montana, and select sections will be available on the CowGirl Channel and Cowboy Channel app.

Novelist Reading at Elk River Books April 11 7pm

Award-winning Billings novelist CRAIG LANCASTER returns to Livingston’s Elk River Books to read from and discuss his new book, Northward Dreams, on Thursday, April 11.  This free event starts at 7pm and followed by book signing and reception.

Northward Dreams weaves together four timelines to depict the dreams and despair of several generations of a Western family, from the 1950s to the 2010s. According to the publisher, “In this novel, Lancaster, who has been hailed as ‘one of Montana’s most important writers,’ goes deep into how history shapes and confines us and how hope sometimes stubbornly abides.”

Lancaster is the author of ten novels and a collection of short stories, including two High Plains Book Award-winning titles: 600 Hours of Edward and And It Will Be a Beautiful Life. His work has been honored by the Montana Book Awards, the Utah Book Awards, the Independent Publisher Book Awards, the International Book Awards, the American Fiction Awards as well as many other citations. His first full-length play, Straight On To Stardust, made its world premiere in October 2023 in a production by Yellowstone Repertory Theatre.

APRIL 2 Night at the Museums: AN EVENING OF PARK COUNTY TRIVIA

On April 2, 2024, the Depot and the Yellowstone Gateway Museum will join forces to test how well Park County residents REALLY know their own history. This joint fundraiser will celebrate Park County’s history from the Precambrian to the Present with prizes, raffles, gifts, and giggles.
A GRAND PRIZE of $600.00 awaits the winning team, as well as bragging rights, and a memorialization of your achievement on plaques to be hung in both the Depot and the Yellowstone Gateway Museum!Categories for questions may include: Trains & Railroads; Historical Characters of Park County; “Name this place” from old Photos; Ranching; Yellowstone National Park; Geology; Linkages between Hollywood and Park County; Archeology; and Surprise Wild-Card Questions.

“WOMEN’S HISTORY” FAMILY DAY AT YGM 3/30 10AM-12PM

Staff and volunteers will provide activities that celebrate Women’s History Month for students, youth, and their families. Activities are available for all ages.

This month participants can make their own papers quilts, using yarn and history-inspired paper squares. Some squares depict successful local and regional Montana women who contributed to the success of our communities… Art supplies are included. Coloring pages also available.

In addition, quilts from the museum’s collection will be on display, including a stunning hand-embroidered Montana Centennial quilt that documents many historic events of Park County. 

Admission is free.
