Before the late 1880’s, these wide open spaces enchanted mountain men and trappers. Later ranchers and farmers came to the Paradise and Shields Valleys to stake their claim on a piece of the Rocky Mountain frontier. Miners sought gold and many more followed the “iron horse” of the Northern Pacific Railroad to find adventure and a new way of life in the West.
A century ago, Livingston was the “original gateway to Yellowstone National Park”. The landscape has changed a little since those early days, but wildlife still roams through the countryside. As in the past, the mountains continue to create a spectacular backdrop for our open valleys and flowing waters. Today, Livingston’s Main Street and historic districts evoke memories of those early years through its grand old buildings and vintage homes, Livingston Depot Center and Yellowstone Gateway Museum.
Just 25 miles west, you’ll find the bustling city of Bozeman with additional vocation, education and recreation opportunities: Montana State University ; Gallatin Airport; skiing at Bridger Bowl, Big Sky or Moon Light Basin; Bozeman Symphony and Intermountain Opera Company. 52 miles south of Livingston is Yellowstone National Park – “America’s first playground”.
